Get to know your student’s roommates
when you visit the campus. Consider inviting them home with your child for a
long weekend or holiday.
Always provide an environment that
is inviting to your child’s friends, no matter what age they are.
Do more listening than talking.
Remember that criticism closes the lines of communication. Just listen.
Stay in the moment. You may be
surprised by the wisdom your student has.
Asking a volume of questions is
another shutdown. Be creative in gathering information.
Observe your child. You will know if
there is any area of concern by their paying attention to their behavior.
Share with your child any lessons
that you learned the hard way as a college student. Let your child know that
you understand their frustrations and their struggles.
