What Is A Core Class?

Review the college catalogue so you understand the required course work for your student.
Even if your student does not know their major, they will begin by taking core classes — the basic required courses that usually must be completed before taking higher-level classes.
Your student needs to connect with an advisor at the earliest possible time.
Discuss possible majors with your student when appropriate.
Keep an eye on required courses so there are no surprises later. How many times have you heard of a student that is lacking one class for graduation? And before they can take that one class that is offered only once a year, there is a lower-level class that is required… It goes on and on…
Your student should be accountable for following their requirements. You need to know enough to ask the right questions, especially if you have a student who is not in any hurry to graduate.
