6 Biggest Blogging Mistakes

Blogging may sound so easy to do. Yes, it could be, if you exactly know how to go with it.

I worked with a lot of bloggers and most often, they commit the same mistakes over and over again. Here are six mistakes commonly practiced by some bloggers.

Mistake #1: No Clear Goal in Blogging

If you plan to have your own blog, you should answer these questions: Why make a blog? Why would the readers read your blog? 3) Can your readers get something from your blog? These questions can help you come up with a clear goal for your blog.

For instance, if you want to make money out of blogging, you can set a goal of $1,000/month through sales of certain products and/or services, or if you intend to make your blog a library of contents or promote the daily habit of blogging, then your goal is to post a 500-word article every day.

But whatever is your goal, the important thing is you have a concrete set of objectives and then monitor if these have been reached.

Remember: Set a medium-term goal or purpose of your blog that you can achieve say, in one year.

Mistake #2: Inconsistent Posting

Be consistent in posting contents on your blog. You must do it more frequently so your readers can make time to follow you. If you don’t post anything for months, then your readers might lost interest and would never visit your blog again.

Remember: Follow a blogging rhythm that works for you.

Mistake #3: Poor Editing of Posts
Nobody is perfect but at least, you should exert effort to make your blog error-free.

Some readers would understand occasional typographical errors but if done constantly, this may ruin your credibility. Don’t rely on ‘spell-check.” Read your articles carefully. If an editor is needed, then hire one. Or better yet, ask your friend to read over your posts before you hit the “publish” button.

Remember: Write your posts a day ahead and go over it the next day before publishing.

Mistake #4: Poor Formatting

Make your site attractive to the eyes of the readers, especially the older ones, by following good formatting.

You may:
·        Write short paragraphs in your posts
·        Use bullet points to break up some text
·        Use bold text or H2, H3 and H4 to highlight key points
·        Add more “white” space to your pages and keep post width to less than 600 pixels
·        Add pictures or videos if applicable to break up the text

Remember: Make your site reader-friendly and make your posts easy to read.

Mistake #5:  Wrong SEO strategy
Blogging and SEO are a powerful duo but you need to carefully balance these two.

The contents of your blog matter most. If your posts are reader-friendly, then they will be SEO-friendly too.

To have a balance between blogging and SEO:

·        You may optimize keywords later, or after writing posts for your readers
·        Increase your chance of being found in Google by using the same words your readers use
·        You may add keywords in your headline or page title, in sub-headlines, image name and description, or opening paragraph

Remember: Make a page of your best posts about a specific topic.

Mistake #6: No ‘Call to Action’
It’s very common for many bloggers to just end their post without giving the readers any clue on what to do next.

The last few lines of your post would be a great opportunity to encourage the readers to do something (called a “call to action” by marketers). You may ask them to:

·        Leave a comment
·        Subscribe to your blog
·        Sign up for a mailing list
·        Buy your product
·        Watch a video
·        Share your post on social media

Remember: Writing a “Call to Action” doesn’t leave the readers hanging. You may write something like “If you enjoyed reading this, click here to subscribe to my blog.”

So if you want to get ahead and be the best in the blogging industry, avoid committing these six mistakes.
