Plan To Put Up $350 Million Casino To Tyre Underway

A plan to bring a $350 million casino to Tyre has gained the attention of the national director of a Washington, D.C.-based group fighting the government sponsorship of casinos.

Les Bernal, national director of Stop Predatory Gambling, will visit Tyre in Seneca County on Thursday to speak out against the casino proposal and call upon the Tyre Town Board to vote against any endorsements or approvals for the planned Wilmot Casino & Resort.

“Any casino in that region will be a failure,” Bernal said in a phone interview Wednesday afternoon. “It’s not a question of if, but when.”

Wilmorite, a Rochester-based commercial real estate development, construction and management company, plans to build a $350 million destination in Tyre, about 90 miles northwest of Binghamton, with 2,000 slot machines, 100 gambling tables and a 200-room hotel.

Wilmorite representatives were in Albany on Wednesday for a mandatory applicant conference but did not publicly ask any questions. The company paid the $1 million application fee last week and will need to submit its formal application to the state by June 30.
