Garden Shears: Your Best Companion At Home

A gardener, or any person who takes care of plants, needs companion for his or her everyday works in the garden. That companion is not a person but the tools, called garden shears.

Garden shears are tools needed by all gardeners in the maintenance of the plants in their garden.

Garden shears are used to cut or trim plants that have already overgrown or those plants with new limbs that have already covered the pathway. These are also used to cut the stems or branches of plants for them to have a new look or shape or to allow the plants to have flowers.

Other people use garden shears to get specimens for transplants.

Among the garden shears needed by gardeners are pruning shears and lopping shears.

Pruning shears, also called hand pruners, are large scissors with strong blades that are used to cut stems, branches or buds of plants. The blades come in three designs: parrot-beak, bypass and anvil. The type of pruning shears to be used depends on the kind of plants to be trimmed such as roses, trees or shrubs.
Lopping shears, on the other hand, are the kind of garden shears that usually comes with long handles. The blades available for lopping shears are similar to pruning shears – bypass and anvil. When buying lopping shears, choose those with aluminum handles that are not only durable but also lightweight so it won’t harm your hands. Choose also those that produces clean cut without straining the stems or branches. Some lopping shears have fully-hardened steel blades for heavy-duty cutting jobs.
The type of garden shears to be used by gardeners also depends on the kind of work in the garden. If gardeners are planning to trim roses, they have to buy small hand shears, hedge trimmers or lopping shears suitable for heavier canes that cannot be cut using smaller shears and a pair of gloves since roses have thorns.

If you are planning to prune bushes and fruit trees, the garden shears recommended are hand pruners that are easy to close. A lopper or a pruning saw might also be needed for bigger branches or stems. But for much bigger branches of trees, a chainsaw is definitely needed to cut them off.
Choosing the kind of garden shears needed to maintain a beautiful garden all boils down to just two important facts: quality of the garden shears and the comfort these tools give to the user’s hands.
