Italian designer Gianni Versace listing his previously owned home in the real estate market
makes a big story on its own, but what increases the intrigue is the home’s
whopping price of $125 million. See complete details here
It is very common for a home to be
priced over $100 million. Even the Spelling Manor which is initially listed for
$150 million was sold for only $85 million. Homes that are priced over $100
million are rare, and the only other property that belongs to this category is
the popular Fleur de Lys in Bel Air, which is priced for $125 million as well.
What makes a home reach the “over
$100 million” category?
The home of Versace consists of 10
bedrooms, 11 baths and a 54-foot mosaic pool which is lined in stunning
24-karat gold. In 1930, architect and philanthropist Alden Freeman built the
18,838-square-foot home, also known as the Casa Casuarina. The property was
converted into an apartment building by Jacques Amsterdam after Freeman’s
death. Click here to view more pictures
In 1992, Versace bought the home for
$10 million and spent about $33 million for the expansions. He added an entire
south wing and exterior plazas including the flashy gold pool. Looking back to
his death, Versace was murder right outside his mansion as he returned from his
morning walk some time in 1997.
The home was purchased by Telecom
entrepreneur Peter Loftin for $20 million and flipped it on his own. For a few
years, he stayed at his private residence in Miami Beach before turning the
home into boutique hotel Villa by Barton G in 2009.
