Nevertheless, 68% of all the electrical contractors who responded thought that grow LED lights would be a good replacement for the fluorescent tubes that are often used for growing plants indoors.

Another reason grow LED technology was favored is that there is a substantial reduction in energy use. LED lighting is directional and can be focused straight toward the leaves of the plant. It is not wasted by lighting the walls and ceilings. This is good both environmentally and economically.

The electricians disagreed in about equal numbers on whether or not grow LED fixtures would be a good commercial product. Most of the difference came in their thoughts about the cost.

Pro comments included the detail that costs are dropping as grow LED lights become more popular. Many contractors pointed out that long-term savings are high because of lower operational expenses and a less frequent need for replacement.

Other electrical contractors believed that most owners won't like the steeper initial costs and will be impatient to wait several years to recover their upfront costs in savings over time. The first year costs can be five times higher and it is hard to predict energy costs in the future.

A final consideration for using grow LED lamps is that many of the 11% of lighting professionals who are undecided about LED grow lights believe it is the market of the future.
