are designed to be used to mimic the light produced by the sun that benefits and stimulates plant
growth.
Grow lights, as they are often called, have traditionally been the standard incandescent or, more
recently, fluorescent type of bulbs. Many gardeners are finding, however, that grow led lights are
far superior to these traditional types of bulbs.
Plants benefit from varying wavelengths of light at the different stages of development. Using
a grow led, a cultivator can target the spectrum of light that will be of most value to the plant.
At times the red range of the spectrum is most beneficial while at others the blue spectrum
stimulates the most growth.
Another advantage of using grow led lights is the efficiency in which they use electricity. To
produce the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb, a led light would use only 7.5
watts. That is nearly an 88 percent improvement in operating costs.
Lifespan is another factor that would influence an indoor gardener to choose led. An led light
is expected to last approximately 30,000 hours before failure. The incandescent bulb only lasts
about 1,800 hours and the compact fluorescent only 8,000 hours.
It has been determined that plants can only use as little as 35% of the light produced by other
grow lights. Almost all of the light produced by a grow led is useful to the plant. Better light
means greater production and stronger plants.
The low heat output of grow led lights also makes them a great choice for indoor gardening.
The lower heat prevents scorching plants and eliminates the need for special ventilation or air
conditioning.
In configuring a lighting system for indoor growing, a grow led is clearly an excellent choice
in regards to production and efficiency. The superiority of these lights compared to other types
often chosen for this purpose is unmistakable.
