I recently read this blog and it reminded of a dilemma that parents
face. Many college students change their majors multiple times. many
times it is appropriate but many times it is a knee jerk reaction to a
bad grade, a difficult professor or a boy/girl friend in a different
major.
Changing majors should be a responsible decision. My suggestion to
parents is to agree with your student that you will pay for four years
of credit hours. If your student is on a semester system, it is 120
Semester hours. The usual class load is 5 classes, 15 credits per
semester.
So you agree to pay for 120 Semester hours. If they change majors,
fail classes or repeat classes, it is on their dollar. This will give
them motivation to think before they make a quick decision to switch
majors. Also, it will not hurt your student to work during the
summers, during the school year or take a semester off to earn money
to complete their college program. this is the responsible thing to
do.
There are many students that have cold feet towards graduation. Being
a student, although they complain about it… is safe. Getting a J-O-B
is frightening but it is rights of passage.
Do not protect them from growing up. Just like that fear of going to
college, it is time to go to the next step.
