Roommate problems appear to be a rites of passage in college but some students become the real losers in this process. We have more “Only” children going off to school and we also have children that are over stimulated by the constant activity in the dorms.
Try to listen to your child and not blow them off when they explain that they are having issues with their roommates. Ask them how they will handle the problem and like always, only offer advice when asked. Do not become personally involved. Allow them to solve the problem. Remember, we have parked the helicopter.
If asked… options include: studying at the library, Starbucks, or Dennys. A meeting of the roommates to decide some simple rules may be a good idea. Your student also needs to understand that this is a consensus type meeting. There is give and take.
As your student gets higher in their education, they may want to consider not having roommates. This is one of the pluses for going to a local college. Living at home, there are no roommate problems.
